YMCAs in Canada operate under federated model with five independent YMCA Member Associations in Nova Scotia. Member Associations collaborate provincially, regionally (Atlantic), and nationally to support the YMCA federation and the communities served.  

The Opportunity

The Director of People and Culture will play a leading role in ensuring that the YMCAs across Nova Scotia and wider Atlantic region are well positioned to deliver effective Human Resource functions that align with our shared values and mission and independent strategic and operational plans.

The role will dedicate: 50% of time to working directly with the YMCA of Greater Halifax/Dartmouth; 25% to the needs of the other Nova Scotia YMCAs; and 25% to strategic initiatives of benefit to the whole Atlantic region.  Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer of the YMCA of Greater Halifax/Dartmouth the role will be accountable to the CEOs in the province and the Vice President of the Atlantic region.

Responsibilities include

Provide expert counsel and training to YMCAs of Nova Scotia to ensure they’re equipped to respond to local workforce issues.  

  • Help the YMCA enhance employee engagement throughout the employment cycle, including recruitment, onboarding and retention strategies.
  • Provide coaching and expert input to managers on complex individual cases related to recruitment, performance, leaves or termination.
  • Strengthen our culture of inclusion and support proactive initiatives that address equity and diversity within our workforce.
  • Develop and implement tools, resources, and training to ensure Association’s managers are equipped to follow established procedures and policies
  • Advise on local implementation and changing legislation and labour standards.

Lead strategic HR initiatives that position YMCAs across the Atlantic Region as employers of choice. 

  • Project manage strategic HR initiatives identified to be of benefit to YMCAs across the region including: compensation reviews, diversity training, employee engagement.
  • Lead development of process documents and other tools and support local implementation.

Foster collaboration to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.

  • Engage regularly with managers at YMCA of Greater Halifax/Dartmouth and CEOs of YMCAs in Nova Scotia to understand their needs and opportunities for enhanced support.
  • Lead a working group of HR professionals from across the region to identify strategic priorities, and inform successful development of work and implementation.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Post-secondary education in Human Resources Management, CHRP designation would prove an asset
  • 5-7 Years of experience in Human Resources and/or Organizational Development
  • Strong working knowledge of provincial employment legislation, common law
  • Previous experience in non-profit sector would be an asset
  • Experience implementing successful Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion initiatives creating welcoming work environment.
  • Background in developing high performance employee culture
  • Demonstrated strong collaboration, problem solving, and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple, competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to process improvement
  • High level of diplomacy and demonstrated ability to handle sensitive, confidential situations or information
  • Strong communication and presentation skills-skilled with developing, communicating and presenting information, while applying an inclusive communication strategy

Successful candidates will be required to provide:

  • A current and satisfactory Criminal Record Check/Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Child Abuse Registry Check
  • Proof of valid First Aid and CPR training
  • Proof of full vaccination against COVID-19 (preferred)
  • Employees will be required to attend YMCA Child Protection Training
